<div itxtvisited="1"> In The Headlines:  A strong earthquake in southern <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:PLACE itxtvisited="1" w:st="on"><ST1:STATE itxtvisited="1" w:st="on">California</ST1:STATE></ST1:PLACE> forced Judge Judy Sheindlin to scramble from the courtroom set of her Judge Judy TV show on Tuesday (July 30, 2008).   Cameras were rolling in the courtroom studio when the quake hit.  Judge Judy left her chair and headed for a doorway.  The show’s audience was seen fleeing for safety as the defendants stood looking dumbfounded . "The Earth shook, the lights shook," she told the Greenwich Time newspaper. ""The whole thing was over very quickly."  No one in the studio was hurt, but Sheindin called the earthquake a wake up call. "Everyone should develop a plan for what to do when something like this happens," she said.  "I didn't even know what to do." Sheindlin said her staff is going to research and develop a response for future quakes.  The earthquake registered 5.4 on the Richter scale, centered 29 miles southeast of <ST1:CITY itxtvisited="1" w:st="on">Los Angeles</ST1:CITY> near Chino Hills in <ST1:PLACE itxtvisited="1" w:st="on"><ST1:PLACENAME itxtvisited="1" w:st="on">San Bernardino</ST1:PLACENAME> <ST1:PLACETYPE itxtvisited="1" w:st="on">County</ST1:PLACETYPE></ST1:PLACE>.  It was felt from <ST1:CITY itxtvisited="1" w:st="on">Tijuana</ST1:CITY>, <ST1:COUNTRY-REGION itxtvisited="1" w:st="on">Mexico</ST1:COUNTRY-REGION> to <ST1:PLACE itxtvisited="1" w:st="on"><ST1:CITY itxtvisited="1" w:st="on">Las Vegas</ST1:CITY></ST1:PLACE>. Biography:  Judge. Born Judith Blum, in October 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. She attended American University in Washington D.C., and graduated in 1963. She continued her education at American University's Washington College of Law, where she was the only woman in a class of 126 students. She finished her law degree in New York, where she moved with her first husband in 1964. In 1965, she obtained her law degree, passed the New York bar exam, and took a job as a corporate lawyer for a cosmetics firm. Dissatisfied with the role of a corporate lawyer, she left within two years to raise two children, Jamie and Adam. In 1972, a friend from law school told her of a job opening in the New York courts. She took the job and found herself in the role of prosecutor for the family court system. She prosecuted juvenile crime, domestic violence, and child abuse cases. She was quickly recognized as a sharp, no-nonsense attorney.  </div>
